Season 4 May Be Sherlock’s Last Season……

…….or not. Who knows?

The clickbait-y headline to this article were the actual words said by Sherlock actor Martin Freeman in an interview with Stephen Colbert. Freeman will be reprising his role as the Hat Detective’s “human” sidekick or potential love interest (if you believe tumblr), Doctor John Watson, in the next season for the hit BBC show. Sherlock is set to be aired on New Year’s Day following a long sabbatical with only a Christmas Special (The Abominable Bride) to keep the fandom satisfied.

The show might be on its last season but neither the cast nor the producers seem to be clear on the subject. Sherlock, despite enjoying international success, comprises of only 4 seasons, with 3 two-hour long episodes in each season. Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, the writers of Sherlock are also the producers of BBC’s Doctor Who. Moffat who was also the creator of Coupling, co-produces Sherlock with his wife Sue Vertue.

Season 4 will see all the same cast members ( Benedict Cumberbatch, Amanda Abbington, Rupert Graves, Una Stubbs, Louise Brealey) with some additions. The trailer teases Sherlock’s dark secret and possibly his love interest. Some the questions that the special raised are also to be answered in this season ( read: what the duck happened to Redbeard).

Benedict Cumberbatch has stated that while season 5 may be possible, fans may want a break from the show after episode 3 of season 4 has been aired. Although that is impossible, *fingers crossed* for season 5.
