‘Passengers’ Promo Premiers New Imagine Dragons Single ‘Levitate’

Sony has released a new promo for their upcoming sci-fi romance Passengers. The film is led by stars Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence who are one of the many people being transported to begin a new life on a far away planet. A sudden malfunction on the ship wakes them from their hibernation (90 years too soon) as they are left to discover what happens next as they begin to fall for each other.

The first trailer promised us a great adventure with a dash of suspense and romance. Oh and a lot of references to other great films too! The second one too held its course in the same way. Today the new promo released by the studio was to promote “Levitate” by American band Imagine Dragons. While I’m very much excited for the single, the promo does manage to do a little damage to the perception of the film. It takes what was being anticipated as an epic sci-fi adventure and dumbs it down to a romance with sci-fi as the background.

The marketing department would surely like to take a step back and rethink upon the promo and its relation to the film as a whole.

The film is directed by Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game) and written by Jon Spaihts (Doctor Strange, Prometheus). It also stars Michael Sheen, Laurence Fishburne, and Andy Garcia.

Passengers opens in theaters on December 21, 2016.

Here’s the official plot synopsis for the film :

Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt are two passengers onboard a spaceship transporting them to a new life on another planet. The trip takes a deadly turn when their hibernation pods mysteriously wake them 90 years before they reach their destination. As Jim and Aurora try to unravel the mystery behind the malfunction, they begin to fall for each other, unable to deny their intense attraction… only to be threatened by the imminent collapse of the ship and the discovery of the truth behind why they woke up.
