Fox Searchlight has released the first official trailer for The Birth of a Nation. Set in the 1800’s against the backdrop of slavery, the film tells the story of Nat Turner, a slave and preacher who led a rebellion in Southampton County, Virginia.
The film first premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival where Fox Searchlight picked up the distribution rights. The film was a major critical hit with praise directed at Nate Parker, who stars as Turner and also co-wrote, produced and directed the film.
Parker also won two awards at the film festival and the subject matter and the release date makes the film a strong early Oscar contender. Will the film evoke the same reaction as 12 Years a Slave did a couple of years back? We will find out soon enough in October.

Here’s the official plot synopsis for the film:
Set against the antebellum South, THE BIRTH OF A NATION follows Nat Turner (Nate Parker), a literate slave and preacher, whose financially strained owner, Samuel Turner (Armie Hammer), accepts an offer to use Nat’s preaching to subdue unruly slaves. As he witnesses countless atrocities – against himself and his fellow slaves – Nat orchestrates an uprising in the hopes of leading his people to freedom.
